[That's what he had heard from the others. That Virgil had been sent back home. Was that Castle Oblivion? Somewhere else? Sora didn't know. But...from how the others have been acting, he couldn't imagine it was anywhere good.]
[Maybe that's why he didn't try to ask this time.]
[It was much later that night. Even though he had been sleeping better since moving in with everyone, tonight he couldn't sleep. Instead he laid in bed, trying hard to remember anything about Virgil or Castle Oblivion- anything at all. But no matter how hard he tried, no matter how frustrated he got- nothing would come.]
[It's not until he hears a sound from another part of the house does he slip out his room to investigate the source.]
[ riku's head jerks up as he hears sora's voice, the dark fire channeling in his hand suddenly bouncing off of his fingers and all around the fireplace--until it finally sets aflame on what firewood he's yanked out from outside. he looks to the door first before he looks to the stairs and he exhales, shoulders slowly slumping. ah.
he glances down at his hands and shakes his head. ]
Yeah? I wake you?
[ he sounds apologetic, even if his spine is stiff. ]
I think he can generate enough of his own heat to stay up there.
[ it's a little defensive; of course it is. riku doesn't want to admit lying. he doesn't do much but close his eyes in front of the fire. if he pretends hard enough, he can imagine they're on the beach roasting freshly-caught fish. ]
[Sora gives him an 'uh huh' face, but says nothing for awhile. Maybe Riku will fess up on his own, if he gives him a minute before prodding him again.]
[So he waits. He makes himself comfortable on the couch and tries to enjoy the warmth. His room wasn't that cold, but it's nice to have the extra heat. This region was way way colder to what he was used to]
[ his back stiffens a little, and then he exhales. ]
No.
[ he has to lie.
he has to say no, because the opposite--thinking of how he'd been happy to see virgil use his powers for good, watching and helping him carve out a place for himself... it just hurt more. ]
[He's familiar with that line, what it meant. Riku's reaction to his question only confirmed it. Virgil was gone, like Xion.]
[Both cases, were unfair. He hated it.]
[But...even if he hated it and it hurt- he still barely knew Virgil, and he was worried about Riku. When it all sinks in, he discreetly slides off the couch and moves to sit down right next to Riku, legs outstretching in front of him. He'd hug Riku, but that seems like too obvious a sign he doesn't buy Riku's lie. So sitting very close by is the compromise to that]
[He can understand forcing positivity to keep things together]
[ riku knows he's moving; besides just plain sound, he can feel that swirl of light get closer. it's worrying--has been, of late. antiform was always a worry; riku'd been struck still when he'd saw it first appear, and he hadn't been able to get it out of his nightmares since. at least it's not a swirling void, like it was when xehanort got his slimy hands on sora. he quells the anger that raises in him like hot air, feeling the sharp jerk of darkness, grimacing as a few peals of it leave around his feet. ]
[Sora isn't as astute with sensing the light or darkness as Riku, but even he feels those jerks of darkness from his friend. It makes him feel uneasy, even if he knew Riku had gotten so much better at controlling the darkness. But he trusts Riku, and digs his right hand fingers into the carpet so they don't ease into the way he holds the keyblade.]
[He's oblivious that he's the one causing those spikes in the darkness for Riku]
[ being apart from sora for a little while gives riku some space to exhale and try to calm down. he couldn't show this darkness around sora. squashing it down never worked, so he'd have to do his best to try and conceal every bit of it that he could, that was too dark. ]
Welcome.
[ milk's on the stove, two mugs on the counter, and riku hops up onto the counter himself, because.
... because. ]
You homesick?
[ riku isn't. thank god. if he actually missed the big, empty house he lived in, he'd kick himself in the head. ]
Action; 12/17

Riku...?
no subject
he glances down at his hands and shakes his head. ]
Yeah? I wake you?
[ he sounds apologetic, even if his spine is stiff. ]
no subject
[He steps into the living room from the doorway, shaking his head.]
No, I couldn't sleep.
[He's both concerned and unsurprised. Riku was a lot closer to Virgil, he knew that]
Whatcha doing?
no subject
It's cold in me and Lea's room.
[ is all he offers, stretching his legs in front of him so the fire radiates warmth over him.
it's a lie. riku rarely outright lies; sure, omitting the truth, of course, but...
at least the walls are soundproof, and riku can gasp awake from nightmares as harshly as he wants to with little consequence. ]
no subject
[He knows it's a lie. There was much too darkness in that fire. But he just comes to sit down on the couch near the fire.]
Then I'm surprised Lea isn't down here too. He is the firebug.
no subject
[ it's a little defensive; of course it is. riku doesn't want to admit lying. he doesn't do much but close his eyes in front of the fire. if he pretends hard enough, he can imagine they're on the beach roasting freshly-caught fish. ]

You said you couldn't sleep?
no subject
[He gives a little shrug]
No. I kept trying to see if I could make myself remember anything about Virgil.
...It didn't work.
no subject
[ he glances back at sora, frowning. he can remember tryign to remember xion and feeling like he was struck by lightning. ]
Seriously.
no subject
[Come on Riku, nothing could possibly go wrong with him remembering that very traumatic game.]
[At least, from his point of view. It just seemed wrong to forget people. How can they live on if no one remembers?]
You still remember him, right? Is it just me who forgot this time?
no subject
[ and it's not his business to talk about it. ]
I remember because I didn't have to forget.
no subject
[...He sure wants to ask wtf kind of good reason could that be, but he bites back on that question for now. Another time, maybe]
- Nevermind.
[His feet kick lightly against the edge of the couch. It's good to know that Virgil won't be forgotten like Xion was, but...]
[Memories weren't exactly the same as the person still being around. Especially if it's worst case and...]
You're upset he's gone, aren't you?
no subject
No.
[ he has to lie.
he has to say no, because the opposite--thinking of how he'd been happy to see virgil use his powers for good, watching and helping him carve out a place for himself... it just hurt more. ]
He's in a better place now.

[He's familiar with that line, what it meant. Riku's reaction to his question only confirmed it. Virgil was gone, like Xion.]

[He can understand forcing positivity to keep things together]
Yeah, I'm sure he is.
no subject
... yeah.
[ he's not sure what else to say. ]
Hot chocolate?
no subject
[He's oblivious that he's the one causing those spikes in the darkness for Riku]
We have some?
no subject
[ more like he accidentally snatched lea's and caused a domino effect of hot chocolate. ]
Double chocolate or peppermint?
no subject
[A domino effect of deliciousness, you mean. And he barely has to think about it]
Double chocolate!
[Chocolate = good. Ergo, MORE chocolate = MORE good]
no subject
Should've figured you wouldn't change. It's a good thing we're best friends.
[ because otherwise he'd have to make two separate batches. he gets up. ]
I'll get them.
no subject
[But he is okay with waiting, and leans back. What. He's a helpful friend but he's still a lazy bum]
Alright. Thanks Riku!
no subject
Welcome.

[ riku isn't. thank god. if he actually missed the big, empty house he lived in, he'd kick himself in the head. ]
no subject
Huh?
[He glances up over his shoulder at Riku. It seemed like an out of nowhere question, so he has to think about it a little]
...Sometimes. But you know, I'm not as much as I was on my first couple journeys.
[That's something, right?]
no subject
I guess that counts for something.
[ though he has to worry, just a little... ]
no subject
For something? Aw c'mon, are you saying you're not even the least bit homesick? Even in this weather?
[BECAUSE SERIOUSLY, AFTER THE AWE OF SNOW WEARS OFF THIS JUST SUCKS]
